Goal: Accelerate innovation and regional economy in Northern Netherlands
The VIA subsidy was established to support projects that contribute to the objectives of the overarching programs EFRO Northern Netherlands and the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS3). The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) focuses on stimulating the regional economy in the Northern Netherlands. Within this region, development opportunities lie primarily in four major transitions, as defined in the RIS3. These transitions offer prospects for sustainable and broad-based prosperity, and the region aims to capitalize on these opportunities in the coming years, including in collaboration with SMEs. These innovations align closely with existing activities and the strong knowledge and entrepreneurial position of the Northern Netherlands.
The four central transitions are:
- The transition from a linear to a circular economy;
- The transition from fossil to sustainable energy;
- The shift from care to (positive) health;
- The transition from analog to digital.
For: technology, digitalization, health and sustainability
Small and medium-sized business entrepreneurs established and active in Groningen can apply for this subsidy.
The project eligible for the VIA grant focuses on a development that is unique worldwide. Furthermore, the project contributes to one of the transitions for a circular, sustainable, digital, and/or healthy Northern Netherlands.

Tip van Enablemi
The VIA subsidy budget for MKB in Drenthe and Friesland was already exhausted this spring. This suggests that, as an MKB’er in Groningen, you shouldn’t wait too long to apply for your idea.
