MOOI

The MOOI grant scheme (Mission-driven Research, Development and Innovation) is intended for partnerships between companies and knowledge institutions working on innovative solutions for the energy transition. The scheme funds large-scale innovation projects that contribute to CO₂ reduction, renewable energy and the Netherlands’ climate targets.

MOOI is intended for integrated innovation projects with an impact on CO₂ reduction, renewable energy and systemic change. The scheme focuses on various missions within the energy transition: Nuclear Energy (currently closed), Electricity, Industry, Built Environment, Carbon Removal, System Integration (currently closed) and Biobased Circular (currently closed).

Please note: a preliminary application was mandatory for this MOOI funding round. If you did not submit a preliminary application, your project will probably no longer be eligible for this round. Fortunately, several alternative funding schemes are available. We would be happy to help you determine which scheme is the best fit for your project.

How much funding is available?

The same funding percentages apply to each mission. Depending on the type of organisation, the grant covers a maximum of 40% to 80% of the eligible costs.

  • 60% for small enterprises
  • 50% for medium-sized enterprises
  • 40% for large enterprises
  • Research organisations can receive up to 80% funding for non-economic activities

A maximum grant of €4 million can be requested per project, subject to a minimum of €25,000 per participant.

What MOOI missions are available?

The upcoming MOOI funding round focuses on four missions:

  • Electricity: for innovations that accelerate and improve the electricity system.
  • Industry: for innovations that contribute to a more sustainable industrial sector.
  • Built Environment: for solutions that accelerate the sustainability of homes, buildings, neighbourhoods or areas.
  • Carbon Removal: for innovations that remove CO₂ and store it for the long term.

The Nuclear Energy, System Integration and Biobased Circular missions are currently closed.

Who is MOOI for?

The MOOI grant scheme is aimed at partnerships consisting of at least three parties, including companies, knowledge institutions and other relevant organisations. By pooling knowledge, expertise and resources, these parties work together on innovative solutions that contribute to the energy transition and the Netherlands’ climate targets.

What are the conditions?

  • The partnership consists of at least three enterprises.
  • The innovation must contribute to the climate targets and be aimed at practical application.
  • The project must be technically and economically feasible.
  • Before submitting the application, you must not have started the project, entered into any obligations or incurred any costs.
  • The project may last no more than four years.
