Goal: Development innovative AI-driven vitality platform that combines psychological, physiological, and biomedical data to provide employees with personalised preventive recommendations while giving employers valuable insights into the vitality of their workforce.

From responding to absenteeism to early vitality detection

Employers are increasingly confronted with rising workloads, labour shortages, and growing absenteeism rates. At the same time, there is a growing need for solutions that do not wait until employees drop out, but instead identify declining vitality at an early stage.

This need led to the creation of VITAAL: the Virtual Intelligent Tool for an Active and Work-Vital Lifestyle.

VITAAL combines psychological factors, physiological indicators, and biomedical markers within a single integrated system. By analysing these data sources using artificial intelligence, the platform creates a comprehensive picture of employee vitality. Based on these insights, users receive personalised preventive recommendations that help them stay healthier, more energetic, and sustainably employable.

What sets VITAAL apart from existing solutions is its combination of innovative technology, behavioural science, and privacy-by-design principles. Employees retain full control over their personal data, while employers receive only anonymised insights that help them improve their vitality and wellbeing policies.

To make this ambitious innovation possible, Enablemi supported the consortium in developing the project concept, building the partnership, and preparing a successful ERDF grant application.

Enablemi’s role

Enablemi brought together a strong consortium that combines complementary expertise in health, diagnostics, artificial intelligence, data infrastructure, and real-world validation. The consortium consists of Maarsingh & van Steijn, NL-Lab, Researchable, Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, and Wadro.

Together, the partners developed an innovative project centred around an AI-driven data and analytics platform, a user application, and an implementation methodology for employers.

Enablemi supported the development of the project plan, the formulation of the innovation and valorisation strategy, and the translation of the consortium’s shared ambitions into a compelling grant proposal. Particular emphasis was placed on the unique combination of psychological, physiological, and biomedical data, the application of artificial intelligence for early detection of health risks, and the practical implementation of the solution within organisations.

The result is a powerful innovation project that contributes to a healthier workforce while accelerating the development of new digital health solutions in the Northern Netherlands.

EFRO

The VITAAL project received funding through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), implemented by the Northern Netherlands Alliance (SNN).

ERDF supports innovative projects that contribute to economic growth, digitalisation, and societal transitions. VITAAL aligns with several key regional innovation priorities:

  • The transition from healthcare towards positive health and prevention.
  • The application of artificial intelligence in health and sustainable employability.
  • Strengthening the Northern Netherlands AI and diagnostics sector.
  • Intensive collaboration between SMEs and knowledge institutions.

Thanks to this support, the consortium is able to develop, test, and validate an innovative vitality solution in a real-life working environment.

VITAAL contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals

The win-win-impact of VITAAL

For employees, the project provides greater insight into their health, improved support for behavioural change, and more control over their own vitality. As a result, health issues can be identified and addressed at an earlier stage.

Employers benefit from healthier and more sustainably employable employees, lower absenteeism costs, and better insights for developing effective vitality policies. Because only anonymised data is used, employee trust and privacy remain fully protected.

The project strengthens the position of the Northern Netherlands as an innovative region at the intersection of health and technology. In addition, VITAAL contributes to the further development of knowledge and education. Through the involvement of Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, new insights are directly translated into research, education, and future innovations.
